Scotties by the Sea – BID St Andrews

We were delighted to work with BID St Andrews (Business Improvement District) to design and create the location map for Scotties By The Sea, an extraordinary public art trail spread throughout St Andrews and the Northeast Fife Coastal Community.

The 10-week art trail will run from 1 September to 12 November 2023, and was created by BID St Andrews with partners Wild in Art. It features 30 giant Scottie dog sculptures dotted across St Andrews and the Northeast Fife coast. Each Scottie dog was decorated, and given a unique name, by local artists and community groups to form a free art trail for everyone to enjoy.

The challenge

The brief was to design and produce a fun and informal location map which would work in harmony with the Art Trail’s app. The 30 Scottie dogs had to be shown on the map as a visual guide for those completing the trail, as well as information about the sculptures, the artists and the sponsors, who had all contributed to this project and made it come to life.

The solution

Scotties by the Sea was designed to celebrate the communities, culture, and creativity of Northeast Fife, and raise money for Maggie’s Cancer Care. So, for the front of the map, our design team developed an engaging map of St Andrews in the Maggie’s brand colour.
We added hand drawn illustrations of key landmarks of St Andrews and pinpointed the location of each sculpture by using what.three.words. The last stage was to create a key to allow the users to find and identify each Scottie sculpture. We also worked with the BID St Andrews team to collate all information required for the content on the back of the map.

The results

The result was an A2 concertina fold map which displayed all the Art Trail information in a friendly and engaging manner.
The front of the map shows all sculpture locations in St Andrews with a call-out section showing the locations of those on the Northeast Fife Coastline. Did you know that the Northeast Fife coastline actually resembles a Scottie dog’s head? Neither did we! We added a bespoke tartan collar round the dog’s “neck”, which tied in very neatly with the area the Art Trail covered.
Once the full A2 concertina fold map was approved, we rolled the design out to create artwork for an A4 tear-off pad, and a downloadable pdf for the event’s microsite.
