SEO – what updates mean for you and your sites

Google’s Penguin and Panda updates have had an unprecedented impact on SEO. While the first question that may spring to mind concerns which animal is next in line to be used for an update – Parakeet? Polar Bear? Peruvian Tree Rat? (Search Engine Land suggested ‘Pigeon‘ for the latest local search update) – Old tactics simply no longer work. Stuffing content with singular keywords, unrelated backlinking, basically writing for search engines rather than people – such approaches now run the risk of extremely punitive responses from Google and your pages disappearing from SERPs.

So what should you be avoiding and what should you be doing? A good starting point would be to have a look at this infographic from Quick Sprout which clearly breaks down the differences between old and new and can inform how best to adjust your strategy. It’s clearer than a Scottish summer sky…ahem.
